Nanostructured carbon materials (nanotubes, fullerenes, disordered carbon and nanocrystalline diamond) have some of the most extreme and unique properties of any class of material. As scanning probe techniques have helped to understand the fundamental structure and electrical properties of carbon nanotubes, technological applications have evolved at an extremely rapid rate. Within a decade of their discovery, commercial nanotube-based electrical components are already available, and it is clear that future advances in electronics and structural materials will include nanostructured carbon. However, a fundamental understanding of the synthesis mechanisms, chemistry, charge transport and mechanical properties of these carbons is necessary to enable the required advances for commercial applications, including: high-volume production, aligned growth or self-assembly of devices, chemical functionalization, controllable electrical properties, and economically competitive structural composites. This volume brings together researchers from the full spectrum of carbon phases and highlights the current state of the art in both fundamental understanding of synthesis and properties of nanostructured carbon and the rapidly emerging application areas.
